Recent technological advances in processing and
analyzing large and complex data offer new opportunities and challenges for
police and security agencies. This technique examines the use of large and
varied data in three key areas: crime prevention, crime detection and national
security. Law enforcement agencies and security agencies routinely collect
large amounts of data in the course of their work preventing and detecting
crime and gathering intelligence. The development of electronic communications
has led to a large increase in the amount and type of data available about
people and their activities that can be used by these agencies. The creation of
large and complex structured and unstructured data is known as ‘big data’.
