Social Work Education in Israel: A Comprehensive Review of Literature

ABSTRACT

Education helps in acquiring values, knowledge and skills which will pass on for next generations. Social work education is learning about social work profession in order to deal with individuals, families and community organization as a whole. In this paper, a comprehensive synthesis of the evolution and current status of social work education in Israel is presented. Extensive literature review was done to understand the contextual developments that propel social work education and practice in Israel. In Israel, the Department of social work was established under the British rule (1920 – 1948) in the year 1931. As an emerging profession, the Faculty members in social work departments come from other fields like Psychology, Political Science, Law and Sociology. First generation of social workers in Israel were from United states and they adopted social work models used in the united states (Cohen and Guttmann, 1998; Gal and Weiss, 2000).
