ABSTRACT
The paper sheds light on the issue of the assertion of selfhood in Shobha De’s Socialite Evenings. Her female characters are at the centre stage from where they make a clarion call to women to become bold and to make their own way of life. She deals with urban women in her novels, especially in the novel under study. The most ubiquitous and enduring concern in Socialite Evenings is the search for identity and selfhood of Karuna, a prominent Bombay socialite who springs from her dissatisfaction with her own existence, which doesn’t turn out according to her expectations.
