Relevance of Vocational Education in School Education in India

ABSTRACT

“Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all” by 2030 is education goal (GOAL 4) under SDG 2030 by United Nation duly adopted by India in 2015. For achieving this goal, vocational education is one of the major component; which plays significant role to develop skills for working force of every country. In Indian context, vocational education overshadowed by traditional academic pursuits. The landscape of vocational education is evolving in Indian school system. To create skilled workforce, Government of India initiated various programmes such as Skill India Mission, National Skill Development Corporation. Various educational commissions, policies, curriculum framework played vital role to develop the skilled work force starting from school. The efforts for development the vocational education in school education are being done since pre-independence era i.e. Wardha Scheme of Basic Education (1937); and post-independence i.e. Radhakrishan Commission (1948-49), Secondary Education Commission (1952-53), Indian Education Commission (1964-66), Acharya Ramurti Committee (1990), Prof. Yashpal Committee (2009), NEP (1968, 1986 (as modified in 1992), 2020). The curriculum framework of school education i.e. NCF 1975, 2000, 2005, 2023 also played vital role in development of vocational education at school level in India. In present paper authors focused on relevance of vocationlisation in school education in India through various efforts/recommendations of commissions/ polices/ NCFs/ Acts in India.
